Táin Bó Cualinge is an ambitious animated rendering of one of Ireland’s most important epic tales, based on Darach Ó Scolaí’s approach to the original Irish language text, alongside the animation skills of John McCloskey, the multiple award-winning author and illustrator / artistic director of the project respectively.
The focus of this version of The Táin is the relationship between Queen Méabh of Connaught, and her consort, King Ailill, and the far reaching consequences of what appears to be a domestic squabble over their relative position in life, but is in reality a power-charged exploration of the position of a female monarch in ancient Ireland, an exploration that offers a contemporary take on an ancient tale.
Táin Bó Cuailnge is a 26′ animation produced for TG4 and the BBC with the support of the Irish Language Broadcast Fund, Coimisiún na Meán and the BFI tax credit.
